Chiropractic Care Benefits Chronic Ear Infections in Kids

Everybody knows that chiropractors are experts in treating neck and back pain, but did you know that your chiropractor can also help with childhood ear infections? The National Institutes of Health tell us that over 80 percent of children will experience at least one ear infection by the age of three.  Here some things that Dr. Nate Bearor of Bearor Family Chiropractic in Roswell wants you to know about what your chiropractor can do to treat ear infections.

.

First things first: What is an ear infection?

An ear infection is a condition of inflammation and swelling that is usually caused by a bacterial infection in your middle ear. Your middle ear is the space right behind the eardrum. Young children are especially susceptible to ear infections because their Eustachian tubes are smaller and almost level, keeping their ears from draining properly.

When little kids get "snotty" colds and allergies, the problem gets even worse.  Mucus blocks the Eustachian tubes. The ears accumulate more and more bacteria until eventually there is a middle ear infection.

What should parents do when their young children show signs of an ear infection?

When your child cries a lot, has trouble sleeping, seems to have trouble hearing, lacks their usual coordination and balance, and especially if there is pus draining from the ear and your child complains of earaches, chances are that your child has an ear infection. There are several appropriate responses:

  • Don't do anything, if the symptoms are mild. In the unlikely chance your child's ear infection is of viral origin, you do not want to give children's aspirin. Antibiotics for bacterial infections have side effects. If the problem seems to be passing, let your child's immune system do the work.
  • See your MD. Your medical doctor can determine if antibiotic treatment is appropriate. Be aware that antibiotics can cause stomach upset and increase the risk of rebound infections if you don't follow your doctor's directions exactly.
  • Make an appointment with your chiropractor. Your chiropractor will not prescribe antibiotics, but can give your child therapeutic manipulation to increase drainage. When pus and bacteria finally drain out of your child's ears, their immune system and any antibiotics your child may have been prescribed have a chance to do their work and beat the infection.

Chiropractic therapy is also appropriate for ear infections in older children, teens, and adults.
